John Mayer and a host of tune-laden stars help out VH1's Save the Music on a Carnival ship in San Pedro.

ONE SPLENDID EVENING WITH JOHN MAYER: Well, the evening's not just that headline-garnering, Twitter-lovin' music maker. Gavin Rossdale, O.A.R. and Jordin Sparks are also in the line-up. And there's a part that we like, and then there's a part that we *really* like. The like part is the whole concert-y affair is on a cruise ship docked in San Pedro; novel, no? We think so. The part we really like is that One Splendid Evening aims to lend a hand -- or voice -- to VH1's Save the Music, something that has been around for almost as long as VH1 itself, it seems to us. And that is an excellent thing. Oh, the musicale entertainment also include Sara Bareilles and Erin McCarley and Guster. Did we mention it is on a ship? We did? Right. Well, a boat very often boasts a Lido Deck -- hello "Love Boat" -- and the Carnival Splendor ship does, too, complete with a DJ for the big night. And there are eats. And an open bar. Nice. Thursday, March 26. Port of Los Angeles Ship Terminals Berth 93, San Pedro. 800-594-TIXX.

ALSO ON THURSDAY, MARCH 26TH: Schmutzig shakes a feathery boa at El Cid; The Festival of Preservation continues at UCLA; and Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks rollick it up something mighty at El Rey.
