Summer Sounds: A Lawn Chair Away

CALLING ALL MUSIC LOVERS: Have a little tango in your step? How about a rumba, or are the summer blues in order? Then you may want to jump in your car and head to Irvine for a summer concert series that will sail you straight into fall.

FESTIVAL BRINGS OUT THE BIG ACTS: The Orange County Great Park, the former home to the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, is hosting its third season of the "Flights & Sounds Summer Festival." Now through Sept. 25, the park will host free concerts with music ranging from Hector del Curto's Eternal Tango Quintet to Grammy Award-winners Blind Boys of Alabama.

DO WE HAVE TO STAND TO EAT? You can use the chairs provided by the park or you can bring your own. That goes for the food too. You can buy snacks and full dinners along with refreshments at the Hangar Cafe, a lounge-like dining space. Or, you can bring your own picnic. While the concert is free, there is a $10 charge for parking.

JOIN IN THE DANCE: The concerts will be performed in front of the historic World War II Hangar 244 on each Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. But to get into the swing of things, there will also be dance instruction at 7:30 p.m. so you can get up on your feet and dance away when the music begins. For a full concert listing, visit the Orange Country Great Park website. You'll also find directions to the park and other upcoming events.
