Driver Plows Into Breakfast Restaurant

NBC 7 San Diego

The aftermath at The Omelette Factory in La Mesa after a driver accidentally plowed into the restaurant on May 24, 2014.

Patrons at a breakfast restaurant in La Mesa got quite a scare with their morning coffee Saturday when a driver plowed into the side of the building, knocking down a wall and leaving shattered glass and debris everywhere.

The incident happened at The Omelette Factory at 5270 Baltimore Dr. at around 8:50 a.m.

According to La Mesa Police Sgt. Jim Huggins, the driver of the vehicle was trying to maneuver into a parking spot, but made a big mistake.

“The driver accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brakes,” Huggins told NBC 7.

Huggins said no one inside the restaurant was struck by the car. Only minor injuries were reported, including some scratches and bruises. The driver was not injured.

The restaurant building sustained serious structural damage.

Huggins said the collision remains under investigation, but alcohol or drugs were not factors in the accident.
