Ortega Fire Started By Irony

An attempt to prevent a wildfire starts a wildfire in Orange County.

A wildfire in Ortega was started Monday by a tractor "disking," a process meant to prevent wildfires, officials said.

As the sun set Monday, authorities were no longer able to use helicopters and planes in the fight against the wildfire, which had grown to more than 100 acres on a rugged hillside near San Juan Capistrano.

Fire crews would remain on the fire lines overnight and full containment was expected early Tuesday morning.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. No homes were threatened.

The blaze started about 11:30 a.m. four miles east of Antonio Parkway and was burning above Ortega Highway. By mid-afternoon, the blaze was 10 percent contained.
