Students returned to a Moreno Valley high school for the fall semester less than a month after the kidnap and murder of 17 year old Norma Lopez.
She disappeared while walking home from summer school classes in July. Her body was later found and police said she was kidnapped and murdered.
At Valley View High School on Wednesday, crisis counselors were on campus so students could talk about the death of a classmate.
"Even though it's a really negative thing that happened, people are realizing that you can't take anything for granted, and you've got to stay safe," said classmate Cameron Graves.
Parents walked to school to closely watch their students.
"A lot of parents are alert, they're holding their kids by their hands," said crossing guard Maribelle Rojas. "They're asking questions. A lot of them are really concerned."
"We live right here where it happened," said neighbor Ping Moscovici. "It's really scary."

At the end of the year, the school will hold a yearbook signing for Norma and give her diploma to her family. Special accommodations were made for Norma's brother and sister who also resumed classes.
