L.A. Mayor to Hold “Bike Summit”

Still recovering from a broken elbow caused by a bicycling accident, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced Tuesday he will hold a two-hour ``Bike Summit'' Aug. 16.

``Let's get together and talk about what we need to do to make the streets safer for cyclists,'' Villaraigosa said.

``Whether you depend on your bike for commuting or just take it out for fun, I invite you to come to the Bike Summit to talk about your experiences and
learn about what we're doing in Los Angeles to make streets safer for everyone.''

The Bike Summit is scheduled for 9-11 a.m. Aug. 16 at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority boardroom at 1 Gateway Plaza.

The agenda includes the city's draft Bicycle Plan which would build more than 1,600 miles of bikeways including 200 miles in the next five years; Los
Angeles Police Department enforcement of laws governing safe driving and cycling; Metro's effort to integrate cycling in the region's rail and bus
network; and other infrastructure and related projects.

Villaraigosa was riding his bicycle in a bike lane at 8627 Venice Blvd.,between La Cienega Boulevard and Cattaraugus Avenue, about 6:15 p.m. July 17
when a taxi abruptly pulled out in front of him, causing him to hit the brakes and tumble over the bicycle handlebars onto the street.

Villaraigosa underwent surgery July 18 to repair his right elbow, which was broken in eight places.
