A section of Melrose Avenue, near Fairfax High School, reopened hours after an 8-inch water main broke there Sunday, causing several shops to flood, according to a DWP spokeswoman.
The rupture occurred under Melrose Avenue at Ogden drive about 2:40 a.m. About fifteen DWP customers lost water service until about noon, said Kim Hughes of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The street reopened by 5 p.m.
The water main caused the pavement to buckle in two places along the 7800 block of Melrose. The water was about a foot deep in some places, Fire Capt. Bob Aragon said.
Flooding was also reported yesterday morning in the 1200 block of Beachwood Drive, near Fountain Avenue, but a DWP crew determined that the break was in a residential pipe, not one owned by DWP.
This all happened just hours after Coldwater Canyon Avenue reopened after being closed since last weekend when a century-old water main ruptured, causing flooding and major street damage.
The city of Los Angeles is in the process of making $4-billion worth of repairs on aging pipelines, many dating back 100 years.
