1 Killed, 1 Wounded in Gardena Police Shooting

The shooting happened during a call about a stolen bike, officials said.

Gardena police fatally shot a man and wounded another early Sunday after a report of a stolen bicycle, officials said.

The shooting occurred at 2:33 a.m. in the 1600 block of Redondo Beach Boulevard, said Deputy Irys Alvarez of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

Two men were hit by gunfire. One died at the scene. The second man was taken to a hospital where his condition was unknown, Alvarez said.

No officers were injured.

Police did not say what caused officers to fire their weapons, but the incident apparently stemmed from a report of a bike theft at a CVS pharmacy, said Detective Eddie Brown, with the Sheriff's Department, which was assisting Gardena police in the investigation.

The shooting occurred outside a 24-hour Carrows restaurant. Restaurant manager Thomas Harrison said police fired a few seconds after telling a man to put up his hands.
