5 Freeway in Irvine Shut Down After Crash Spreads Debris

It was unclear when all lanes would reopen.

All lanes of the Southbound 5 Freeway in Irvine were closed early Saturday morning after a vehicle crashed into a guardrail, spreading debris all over the freeway, authorities said.

The crash was reported around 1:42 a.m. near Alton Parkway after an 18-year-old man fell asleep while driving. The vehicle ran off the road and crashed into a guardrail, sending hundreds of strewn pieces up to half a mile on the freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver was traveling with an 18-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy. The female victim was transported to a  hospital with minor injuries, according to the CHP.

At least 11 vehicles were involved in the incident, including a big rig truck, according to the CHAP. None of the other drivers were injured either, according to the CHP.

The vehicles involved sustained body damage and some flat tires from running into the debris.

CHP closed all southbound lanes near Alton Parkway.

A sigalert was issued and was expected to last into the morning as crews cleaned up the debris and, spilled oil and fuel, according to the CHP.
