Pursuit Ends in Construction Site Armed Standoff

The gunman ran into a business near the freeway south of downtown Los Angeles

A pursuit that ended at a construction site led to an armed standoff Monday morning at a nearby business southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The driver, who was wanted on suspicion of DUI, was taken into custody in a warehouse after the overnight standoff in Commerce.

The gunman entered the construction area off the 5 Freeway near the Garfield Avenue exit and climbed onto heavy construction equipment. He pointed a handgun at his head, construction workers and officers before entering a building near the construction site, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The pursuit began in Orange County when California Highway Patrol officers attempted to pull over a green GMC pickup truck for swerving and possible DUI, CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos said. The driver refused to cooperate with officers, authorities said.

CHP officers took over the pursuit at 9 p.m. Sunday on the 5 Freeway when the truck left Orange County and veered off the freeway at Garfield Avenue in Commerce, Villalobos said.

The driver stopped on the freeway, ran through a construction zone and entered a nearby business, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Employees ran from the business and no injuries were reported, according to authorities.

The northbound and southbound lanes of the Santa Ana Freeway were shut down at 12:45 a.m., Villalobos said. The northbound lanes were opened at 1:30 a.m. and the southbound lanes followed at 2:21 a.m.
