Cathedral High School Football Players Suspended Due to Hazing

The hazing, involving freshmen and upper classmen, occurred earlier this week at the all-boys Catholic school campus

At least ten Southern California high school football players were suspended after reports of hazing.

Cathedral High School's administration opened an investigation into allegations of hazing earlier this week at the all-boys Catholic school. The hazing involved freshmen and upper classmen and occurred in and out of the team's locker room.

Details regarding the hazing were not immediately available. Parents of players, who asked not to appear on camera, said the allegations involved players being forced into trash cans.

Principal Brother John Montgomery said the school also notified the Los Angeles Police Department. No arrests were reported Friday morning.

"Administrators took the immediate action and met with the football team Wednesday after school and players were told about the suspensions and reiterated that hazing of any type or for any reason is not allowed at the all-boys private Catholic high school," said Principal Brother John Montgomery in a statement.

Montgomery said the freshmen were taking helmets and leaving trash in the lockerroom. The senior students retaliated by throwing them in the garbage cans.

Parents said they were concerned it may not have been the first hazing incident.

Some parents said they were told by players that some of the freshmen players were allegedly beaten. NBC4 could not confirm those allegations with the school's administration.

Cathedral High School in Elysian Park is the No. 1 ranked team in the Southeast Division at 7-0.
The team's next game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at St. Francis in La Canada Flintridge.

The school suspended 10 varsity football players. The school planned to meet next week to determine if any of those students should be expelled. Parents of the players involved were expected to meet as well.

NBC4 also has emailed the school's athletic director for comment.
