Church Stained-Glass Windows Vandalized in Costa Mesa

Pastor estimates repairing the damage would cost more than $10,000.

An Orange County church was vandalized when its large, stained-glass window depicting Jesus Christ was shattered and apparently written on.

Leaders at First United Methodist Church of Costa Mesa said their 90-year-old stained-glass window was likely broken some time late Monday or early Tuesday.

Pastor Amy Aitken estimated repairing the damages would cost more than $10,000.

Lee Ramos, a parishioner at the church, said he helped board up the broken windows Tuesday night. Ramos also said he took pictures of what appeared to be markings of a pentagram on the glass.

"This window has been featured in countless wedding photos and other community and church events. There is no explanation for such acts of destruction," the church said on its Facebook page.

Aitken said the church would proceed with its Ash Wednesday services.
