Dodgers Drop First Series Since June 7, in 3-2 Loss to Brewers

The streak is over.

Hernan "Pan Blanco" Perez homered off Yu "Yu San" Darvish and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Dodgers, 3-2, to snap L.A.'s 23 consecutive undefeated series streak.

Entering into Sunday's game at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers had not lost a series since June 5-7 when they dropped two-of-three to the Washington Nationals at home.

"That team played a really good series," Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts said of the Brewers. "They pitched well and got the hits when they needed to. We're a little cold right now. It happens to every ball club at some point in the season. It's all happening at once, but we'll get through it."

Since that time, the Dodgers were 19-0-3 before dropping the final two games of the three game series to the Brewers.

It was a scorching hot Sunday for fans and players as temperatures reached triple digits on the field before game time.

The ill effects of the heat reared their ugly head as both teams committed costly errors over the course of the game.

Milwaukee scored first after an error by shortstop Corey Seager.

With runners at the corners and one out, Seager misplayed a groundball at short that would have likely led to an inning-ending double play.

Instead, the ball went through Seager's five-hole, allowing the first run of the game to score.

"It was unfortunate," Seager said of the error. "It was a weird hop and I just misplayed it. You don't ever want to give runs away that early, or at all, but it was nice to get it back and get something going."

Seager would later redeem himself with an RBI and a run scored as he extended his hitting streak to 15 conseuctive games.

"Pan Blanco," or "White Bread" for our non-Spanish speaking readers, homered off Dodgers' starter Yu Darvish in the top of the third as the Brewers scored two runs in the inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Darvish (8-10), who was activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, lost for the first time in a Dodger uniform, allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in just five short innings.

"I had no problems with my back today. I just struggled with some mechanical changes I made," Darvish said of his first start since coming off the DL. "I feel like at different times my pitches were landing at different locations. That's the biggest difference."

His counterpart, Jimmy "Big Sweat" Nelson was brilliant for most of the game, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a pinch-hit single to Chase "Silver Fox" Utley.

"I was mixing it up," Nelson said of his first five flawless innings. "I was not trying to get predictable or throw anything specific during any count. I didn't feel like I got ahead of guys very well, but I was able to make some pitches in hitter's counts."

The Dodgers rallied for two runs off Nelson in the inning, but admittedly got some help from the sun, as Justin "RedTurn2" Turner hit a routine pop fly to right field with two outs that was dropped by Domingo "Showmingo" Santana, allowing a run to score.

Nelson (10-6), surrendered just two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 6 and 2/3 innings of work.

Corey Knebel collected his second save in as many days as he overcame some adversity in the bottom of the ninth for his 29th save of the season.

The Brewers and Dodgers both have postseason aspirations and could meet in the MLB playoffs if Milwaukee continues to play like they did over the weekend.

"If we see them in the playoffs, trust me, the series will be a different story," said Dodgers' catcher Yasmani Grandal after the game.

The Brewers find themselves just 1.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs for first place in the N.L. Central and 3.5 games out of the wild card.

"We proved to ourselves we're right there with the best teams," Nelson said of taking the series from the Dodgers.

Overall, the Dodgers and Brewers split the six-game season series with each team taking two-of-three on their opponents home field.

Despite the loss, the Dodgers are still an MLB best 26-10 during day games this season.

It was the first back-to-back loss for the Boys in Blue since July 20-21 in Atlanta.

After the game, which marks the end of the inaugural "Players Weekend," game-worn jerseys, cleats and other equipment will be auctioned off at MLB.com/auctions with all proceeds going towards the MLB and MLBPA Youth Development Foundation.
