Driver in Fatal Covina Hit-and-Run Surrenders to Police at Urging of Family

A driver suspected in a Covina hit-and-run crash that left a mother dead and her 10-year-old daughter injured surrendered to police at the urging of his family, officials said Monday.

Jose Higareda, 50, of Irwindale, was arrested at the Covina Police Department after he allegedly struck the mother and daughter as they were crossing the street in the 1100 block of W. San Bernardino Road about 6:40 p.m. Sunday, the Covina Police Department said.

Witnesses told police the driver of the brown Nissan Altima did not stop to offer help to the victims, who were left in the street.

Both victims were taken to the hospital, where the mother died and the girl was treated for injuries described by police as "moderate."

Higareda's wife and child, who were riding in the car at the time of the crash, urged him to surrender.

He's being held on $50,000 bail and set to be arraigned Tuesday on a felony hit-and-run charge.
