Suspected Car Thief Surrenders After Rooftop Standoff

A suspected car thief tracked down using a LoJack system surrendered after holding police in a tense, hours-long rooftop standoff in Fullerton on Tuesday night, police said.

Dozens of neighbors came out of their homes to watch as the man, wearing a New Orleans Saints Drew Brees jersey, smoked a cigarette, sat with his legs dangling off the edge and refused to come down from the apartment building at Orangethorpe and Highland avenues.

Earlier in the day, officers received a report of a LoJack hit on a stolen car, according to the Fullerton Police Department. The vehicle was found at a Wal-Mart at Lemon Street and Orangethorpe Avenue in Anaheim.

A short time later, the car crashed a short distance away and the driver fled, police said.

While searching for the driver, police found the man on the roof.

He surrendered just before midnight.
