“Breaking Bad” Funeral Receives Mixed Reviews

Funeral raises thousands, but angers families with buried loved ones at gravesite

People aren't ready to let go of AMC's critically-acclaimed "Breaking Bad" just yet.

Loyal fans paid respects to protagonist turned antagonist Walt White, holding a mock funeral that raised $17,000 but also angering locals with loved ones buried at an Albuquerque grave site.

"This is a place of mourning,” local resident Manuel Montano told NBC-affiliate KOB. “It’s not a spectacle.”

Loyal fans paid for dirt to pour on an empty coffin at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque that even included a headstone commemorating the life of Walt White, whose character put New Mexico's most populous city on the map.

“It brought people into Albuquerque, it brought attention into Albuquerque, and it brought money into Albuquerque,” fan Susan Tyr-Connail told KOB.

The funeral included a procession through town with a hearse, White's RV and escorted by a motorcycle cop.

A few protestors were on hand denouncing the procession, afraid tourists would now flock to the grave site. One family has already begun a petition to remove the headstone.
