Investigation Underway After Reports of Possible Kidnapping in East LA

Detectives from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department were investigating a possible kidnapping in East Los Angeles on Saturday, authorities said.

Surveillance video showed two men getting into a fight before one of them shot the other in the foot.

"When these two people started arguing, one pulled a pistol and hit him in the face," Jose Barajas, a witness, said. "He went to the floor and then he shot him."

A security guard of a nearby grocery store told NBC4 that he knows the victim from his regular trips to the store, one of which had occurred Saturday morning. The guard said just 45 minutes later he saw the victim being shot across the street from a nearby car wash.

The incident was reported just before 10 a.m. in the 300 block of Rowan Avenue, according to a news release by LASD.

After being shot, the man tried to seek help at a nearby building, but could not get into the door before the suspect dragged him away.

"Somebody else came in and pulled him out and shot him in his leg," Irma Varajas, a witness, said. "I really felt bad because I couldn't help him."

The sheriff's department originally said the victims were thought to be two men, but evidence now shows only one victim and one suspect were involved. One of the victims was last seen being forced into the suspect's vehicle and driven away, LASD said.
