LA Deputy Shot in Florence

Police on Friday night are continuing to search for the gunman who shot a sheriff's deputy in the unincorporated Florence area, according to LA County Sheriff's officials.

Three to five people are being sought in connection with the shooting, police said. The shooter is believed to be an African-American man wearing a white hoodie with stripes.

Residents in the area are being told to stay in their homes with their doors and windows locked. Police have asked anyone in the area who sees people acting suspiciously to call 911.

The deputy, who was on duty with the gang enforcement team of LASD Operation Safe Streets Bureau, was shot about 9:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of 87th Street.

He was transported to the hospital where he underwent surgery and is listed in stable condition. Witnesses said he appeared to be conscious and moving.

Sheriff Lee Baca was escorted by law enforcement officials to the hospital Friday night.
