Search Warrant Obtained in OJ Simpson Heisman Trophy Theft

The trophy and the disgraced former NFL star’s #32 jersey disappeared after a thief broke into a display case at USC's Heritage Hall.

The Los Angeles Police Department obtained a search warrant to check the phone records of someone suspected of stealing OJ Simpson’s Heisman Trophy from USC.

According to TMZ, detectives have obtained permission to examine the records of a man they believe pinched the statue from the college’s Heritage Hall back in 1994.

The trophy and the disgraced former NFL star’s #32 jersey disappeared after a thief broke into a display case.

According to the celebrity news site, the cold case became active when a man called USC, claiming he bought the trophy, which was awarded to Simpson in 1968, from a friend years ago and wanted to make sure it was authentic

The college determined he actually had the real trophy, but investigators reportedly did not believe the man’s story and believe he is actually the thief. They then went to court last month to got a warrant to track the guy down and retrieve the stolen items. It is said the suspect cannot be prosecuted, as the statute of limitations has past.

The Heisman trophy in question belongs to the college. Simpson sold his own for $255,500 to partially satisfy the $33 million civil judgment for the wrongful death of wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

The New York Athletic Club awards the gong annually to the player deemed college football's best player.
