Man Leads Police to Backyard Human Remains

A man who led sheriff's deputies Friday afternoon to human remains buried in a backyard in El Monte was arrested.

The remains were found around 3 p.m. in the 9400 block of Cortada Street, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

"Earlier that day a man called the Alhambra Police Department and said he knew where there were human remains buried in El Monte," said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

The unidentified man led sheriff's deputies directly to the remains and was later arrested for suspicion of murder, Whitmore said.

"The remains have not been identified yet,"  Whitmore said. "The suspect's name is not being released because we need to identify the victim first and notify the family."
