The suspect and his estranged wife were divorced but living together, police said.

The suspect used a knife to stab Miraflor Sartorio several times, police said. When Jira woke up and began screaming the suspect then stabbed and killed her, authorities said.

The suspect tried to kill himself by slashing his wrist.

There is no history of domestic violence at the address, police said.

Neighbor Ruben Equihua said he would sometimes see the Sartorios quietly reading a book on the stoop.

"They're a quiet family, very quiet and humble," he said.

Heydi Lopez lived in the house with the Sartorios. She said their marital problems stemmed from financial issues, but they were not the type to scream and yell about it.

"I was shocked, especially when I heard about the little girl," she said. "My little boy used to play with that little girl."
