Monterey Park Officer Faces Sex Assault Charges

A Monterey Park police officer is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of sexually assaulting or detaining three women while on duty, forcing each of them to expose themselves and touching two of them.

Israel Sanchez, 40, was arrested Monday and is facing three counts of false imprisonment, one count of bribery, two counts of assault under color of authority and four counts of sexual battery by restraint, according to the District Attorney's Office.

He faces more than eight years in prison if convicted, according to prosecutors. Sanchez is scheduled to be arraigned in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon.

According to prosecutors, Sanchez detained three women between July 28, 2014, and Aug. 15, 2014, and forced each of them to expose themselves. In two instances, he allegedly touched the women after they exposed themselves.

The case was investigated by Long Beach police at the request of the Monterey Park Police Department.

Sanchez has been placed on paid leave, according to Monterey Park police.

He is currently being held in lieu of $345,000.
