Police Seek Would-Be Robber After Armed UCR Attack

Police are warning students after an attempted armed robbery on the University of California, Riverside campus.

The suspect approached the victim around 8:20 p.m. Monday night close to the UCR Arts building, near University Avenue and Canyon Crest Drive, according to an alert issued by the UC Riverside Police Department.

The suspect pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun and demanded the victim’s property. The victim refused, a struggle ensued and the robbery was interrupted, according to police.

The suspect ran off and fled westbound on University Avenue toward the 215 Freeway.

Students said the attack left them scared.

"It's not safe to walk around campus alone," said Parya Jain.

The suspect is described as a man in his 20s about 6 feet tall, weighing about 170 pounds. At the time of the attempted robbery he was wearing a white hoodie sweatshirt and red shoes.

"It's just scary. You don't want to walk around late at night," said Karisma Naran.

He fled in a 1990s model two-door silver Honda Civic hatchback with black rims. It had an oxidized or discolored roof and dark tinted windows.

Anyone who may have information is urged to call UC Riverside police at 951-827-5387.

Investigators urge caution and ask that no one attempt to detain the man.
