A child died and another was injured night July 24, 2013, after being struck by cars as they tried to cross a street in Santa Ana, police said.

The family of an 11-year-old girl who was killed in a Santa Ana crash that injured her younger brother has set up a donation fund to help cover medical and funeral costs.

Alexis Zuniga and her 8-year-old brother were walking with a group of children and an adult about 8:45 p.m. July 24.

Three children ran across Bristol Street at 10th Street. Two younger children followed them, but ran into oncoming traffic.

Alexis was struck by two cars that night.

The first car hit both she and her brother, according to Santa Ana police Cmdr. Eric Paulson. After she landed, the girl was struck by a second car. She died at the scene.

Alexis' brother has been released from the hospital and is "doing well," the children's cousin, who wished to remain anonymous, told NBC4.

A donation fund has been set up with Wells Fargo to help cover medical and funeral costs.

Donations can be made under the account name "La Guera," meaning "angel."

The account number is 5375051280. Online donations can be made using the routing number 121042882.

Alexis' funeral is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Pillar Church in Santa Ana (map).

Anyone who would like to attend the service is welcome, the girl's cousin said.

After the crash, police in Santa Ana reiterated the importance of pedestrian safety. The group was cross the street at an unmarked crosswalk -- meaning, there were no white lines on the roadway, but by law, pedestrians could cross the intersection, with an important caveat.

"If you can do so when it's safe. You can't just walk out in front of traffic where they don't have enough time to stop for you," Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told NBC4 last week.
