The South Coast Air Quality Management District has imposed a fireplace and outdoor burn ban on residents in much of Southern California because of pollution concerns.
Indoor fires and outdoor wood burning are prohibited through Tuesday night.
City News Service reported the Coachella Valley, residences above 3,000 feet in elevation and homes where there is no other source of heat are excluded from the ban.
Fine particles in wood smoke can penetrate deep into the lungs, causing problems for people with asthma or other respiratory problems.
First-time violators of the ban are subject to a $50 fine and subsequent violations can result in increased penalties.
