Water Main Break Causes Massive Sink Hole in Mid-City

A water main break Friday in the Mid-City area caused a geyser and sinkhole, making a wet day even wetter and disrupting service to dozens of Department of Water and Power customers.

The break was reported about 3:45 p.m. on La Brea Avenue south of Venice Boulevard, according to Amy Bastman of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

La Brea Avenue was shut down between Venice and Washington boulevards as crews shut off the water and set about making repairs to the broken 12-inch main and ruptured pavement.

Two northbound lanes were reopened about 6:50 p.m. but southbound lanes remained closed as of 6:15 a.m., Saturday, according to the DWP.

Water service was interrupted for 40 DWP customers and it was unclear when it would be restored, a utility spokeswoman said.

Offiicals originally had hoped the water main would be restored by 7 a.m. Saturday, but expect it to be restored later.

Crews were expected to work well into the night, according to the DWP.

The break occurred as a winter storm dropped light to moderate rain on

Los Angeles and other portions of Southern California.
