Record-Setting $160M Contract Extension for Dodgers Matt Kemp

8-year deal marks largest in team history

Dodgers outfielder and NL MVP frontrunner, Matt Kemp, signed an eight-year, $160 million contract extension, setting the record for the largest deal in franchise history, the team announced Friday.

The 27-year-old outfielder had a monster season this year with a .324 batting average, 39 home runs and 126 RBI.

"Eight more years, that's a long time," Kemp said at a Friday news conference.

"Like Mr. McCourt said, I definitely want to spend the rest of my career here," he said.

"Like Derek Jeter, he's had that career where he's definitely, I think, he's going to end up with the Yankees. I would like to definitely end my career here, and be part of this dynasty. I want to see this team grow. I want to be there for that and I know we have the opportunity to do something special here," Kemp said.

The previous Dodger contract record was set by pitcher Kevin Brown in 1998 with a seven-year, $105 million deal.

Kemp's only real competition for the National League MVP Award is Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun, who per usual, also put up big numbers. The award will be announced Nov. 22.

"I still want to win the MVP," Kemp said. "I put all that hard work in the training room and weight room for a 162-game season. The outcome is that you always want to be the best. Being thought of as one of the best makes you want to try harder the next year."

The award season has been kind to the Boys in Blue this year, with lefty Clayton Kershaw winning the NL Cy Young on Thursday.
