99 Internet Sensations You Need to See

Play catch-up on the Web's greatest hits

LOS ANGELES -- In case you've just awoken from a coma (I'm looking at you, Jack) or your mother's basement doesn't have the Internet, you may need a crash course in Internet memes.

According to Mike Godwin, a meme "is an idea that functions in a mind the same way a gene or virus functions in the body. And an infectious idea (call it a 'viral meme') may leap from mind to mind, much as viruses leap from body to body."

Yes, we're talking about the Star Wars kid, Spaghetti Cat, and obviously, the combination of Mentos and Diet Coke.

But, here's the rub (the Bubb Rub and Lil Sis?).

No matter how plugged in you think you are, there are probably a few Internet sensations that have managed to slip by you.

That's where Greg Rutter comes in.

Rutter, my newfound hero, has compiled the "Definitive List of the 99 Things You Should Have Already Experienced On The Internet Unless You're a Loser or Old or Something."

I thought I had seen it all. That was, until I saw the "definitive list." Sure, the site isn't exactly brand new, but even a meme expert can still learn a thing or two from Rutter.

One a side note, if this list had a 100th item, we'd like to suggest this Nutrigrain commercial.
