It's not unusual for Angelenos to drive by businesses that don't actually exist.
In fact, we're all pretty much inured to storefronts that are dressed as something else, in preparation for being in a commercial or film. So when a business becomes another business, complete with name change, but it will actually be operational, we almost need to do a double-take.
That's what will happen when the Buttermilk Truck turns into the "Superior Donuts" truck, in honor of the play of the same name opening at the Geffen Playhouse. Previews of the play start on Tuesday, May 31, but the truck'll set up in Westwood for the day on Friday, June 3 (which, coinkidinkly, happens to be National Donut Day).
So if you're in Westwood on June 3, and you think, "that's a fake, for-the-movies truck," stop and order a donut. Because there will be actual food inside, not, like. Plywood boards and backdrops.
The play, which details the dramas and ultimate transformation of a small Chicago restaurant, will run through July 10. Gary Cole and Edi Gathegi star. The Buttermilk Truck -- sorry, the Superior Donuts truck -- will be in front of the Geffen Playhouse from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, June 3.
