A 7-year-old boy who ran into a street in South Los Angeles to chase a ball was critically injured Monday when he was struck and run over by a gray minivan whose driver fled the scene. The accident occurred in front of the victim's home in the 6900 block of Estrella Avenue, near West 70th Street, about 6 p.m.
The driver was identified as a “female Hispanic, 35-40 years of age,” according to a LAPD news release.
Police said the woman stopped her van and got out of the vehicle. Once she understood what she had done she quickly jumped back into her vehicle and sped away without offering to help the critically injured child, according to the release.
The youngster, whose name has not been released, was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.
