Labor Day Weekend in Long Beach

What with the Art Deco Festival at the Queen Mary over Labor Day Weekend, and two other major go-outs, we should all find our thing to do in the LBC. Plus, those beautiful, beachy breezes. You're wanting them, yes? We are, too.

Long Beach is known through musicdom as a true nexus for blues. The festivals, the concerts -- they're plentiful. Next up: the Long Beach Blues Festival. KJazz 88.1 FM is a part of the extravaganza, and so are many majors: Mavis Staples, Bobby Womack, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Funky Meters, Johnny Winter. Plus more great musicianry.

There are two stages, and two days, so best have a look-see at the whole schedule to make sure you're at Rainbow Lagoon Park for the act you want to see most. Or acts. Because, as with most music festivals that have been around for a solid three decades, you'll probably want to make a whole day of it. Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th.

The Long Beach Greek Festival celebrates just a short drive away from the Blues Fest. This party goes right through Monday -- so September 5th-7th -- and includes a carnival, Greek dancing -- and lessons, yes, we want -- shopping, and hello, the food. Spanokopita, come to us. Hello, tzatziki.

The location is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church at 5761 E. Colorado in Long Beach. If we leave without giving a heartfelt "opa!" we'll regret it. So, opa!
