Historic Filipinotown Festival is celebrating its 15th traditional fiesta on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Silverlake Medical Center. NBC4 Meteorologist Shanna Mendiola will emcee the event, with thousands of attendees and participants expected. Broadcast journalist Thelma Aranda Sugay will also support emcee duties.
A parade of various Filipino American community organizations and service groups will be part of the festival, followed by the Bayanihan Award ceremonies featuring the most notable Filipino American professionals and entrepreneurs in Los Angeles. The day will also showcase the artistry and cultural flavor that is truly Filipino, including music, dance and a battle of the bands with the winning band taking home $500 plus access to professional coaching.
Historic Filipinotown Festival was envisioned by the founding members of the Historic Filipinotown Neighborhood Council, its president Ceclia Ramos and VP Leo Pandac. The mission is to commemorate the official designation of the 13th district area in Los Angeles now referred to as Historic Filipinotown. In 2002, then Councilman and now Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti believed that the time had come to give honor to the first Filipino farmer migrants who resided in the area in the early 1900’s and contributed to the agricultural growth of the same.
