Woman's Death Shakes Skydiving Community

Friends described a Newport Beach woman who died in a skydiving accident Friday as an experienced skydiver with a passion for helping people.

Authorities said Brooke Baum's parachute did not fully deploy above a field in Perris. Friends and other skydivers have been leaving messages on a forum devoted to the 33-year-old woman.

"Brooke helped me walk again," one forum contributor wrote. "Without her, I don't know if I'd be back in the good health that I am.

"I've never been able to fully convey my gratitude... She had a huge passion for her friends, for helping people, and for skydiving."

The skydiving facilty is based at Perris Valley Airport on Goetz Road, just south of the Escondido (215) Freeway.
