Storecasting: Stories Bookstore in Echo Park

We mentioned that Spaceland's booker Liz Garo and business partner Claudia Colodro are set to open a bookshop called Stories at 1716 Sunset Boulevard, near 826 LA's Echo Park Time Travel Mart and in the same vicinity as incoming retail Origami record shop and Out of the Closet. Adding to the area as well will be a late-night pizza joint, boutique ice cream shop and an imported beer bar.

LAT's Jacket Copy blog reports on the indie bookstore, opening late October: "[Garo and Colodro] plan to carry a mix of contemporary fiction, California and L.A. history, a smattering of art and design books, small-press journals and a used section priced at starving-novelist rates." The shop will also house "a small cafe with Middle Eastern-inspired snacks."

And in regard to the gentrification of the area, Garo told the blog: “Claudia and I have both worked in Echo Park, and we see the changes, but the neighborhood is really open and excited about having a positive new business...Echo Park is in a delicate place right now. But we wanted to make it so you can buy a used book for a couple bucks and go read by Echo Park Lake for an afternoon.”
