Strawberry Shortcakes Go Very, Very Long

There are people out there who love strawberries who, probably daily, maybe hourly, wish they lived near just one strawberry-themed festival. And our hearts go out to them. Really. We don't mean to seem selfish here in SoCal, with our double-dose of strawberry goodness every May, but that's just the way it is.

We know we're lucky. We acknowledge it. Does that stop us from boasting about it? No. It does not. Sorry, other people everywhere.

Oxnard's Strawberry Festival may have wrapped for '09, but up next is the mondo Garden Grove Strawberry Festival. The seeds were planted for this one in 1958, and it just has continued to grow into a major, four-day, family friendly, food-fun spectactular. All of our favorite things put together, plus shortcake.

Oh, right, that famous-among-strawberry-lovers shortcake. The festival dishes up the world's largest, so if a crumb-good square of something strawberry-licious is tops on your things to eat list, get to Garden Grove on May 22 for the 6PM cutting. But if you can't make the eating of the cake, you can still hit the rides, the food booths, and the other county-fair-like contests throughout the weekend.

There are also appearances by a variety of celebs from movies and shows like "High School Musical" and "Hannah Montana" and "Desperate Housewives" (eye the line-up to make sure your fave star is attending). Cloris Leachman is a grand marshal. Is that fabulous lady everywhere? Yes. She is.

Festival is on May 22-25. Free admission (food/rides additional). Location's the Village Green in downtown Garden Grove.
