In March, former Fraichemaker Jason Travi signed up to become the chef for longtime restaurateur Jeffrey Best. He currently “directs the culinary activities of Mesa,” Best’s stylish restaurant and lounge in Costa Mesa. “He’s definitely brought his unique style,” says Best, “He brings passion from French fries to foie gras.” Travi will next tackle Firefly and The Darkroom, a Melrose bar that Best has owned for two years.
The Darkroom just got the long-awaited green light to add a kitchen. Construction will start in August. Best said that he and Travi still have to discuss the direction of the menu, but it will involve bar food. Fine-tuning the Firefly menu is also on their horizon.
