The death of a reserve Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy while participating in the mountain biking competition at the 2017 World Police & Fire Games was an accident, authorities said Saturday.
The coroner's office conducted an examination of Deputy Jacob Castroll, 67, and determined he died from blunt force trauma of the head and neck, according to the coroner's website.
Castroll served as a reserve deputy since 2010 in the sheriff's Malibu-Lost Hills Station.
Castroll was found about 9:40 a.m. Friday lying unresponsive on the Castaic Lake area race course by another rider, according to Deputy Ryan Rouzan of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.
Paramedics took him to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in "full (cardiac) arrest," county fire Inspector Joey Marron said.
Castroll was pronounced dead about 11:15 a.m. at the hospital, according to Rouzan, who said the death will be investigated by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau.
Sheriff Jim McDonnell issued a statement expressing sadness on behalf of the department over the deputy's death.
