Gas Leak That Caused Evacuation in OC Capped

An SUV crashed into a gas meter behind a Laundromat in Stanton on Sunday night, causing a leak that prompted the evacuation of about 125 people from a strip mall and two nearby apartment buildings, authorities said.

The leak was stopped at 8:15 p.m. and the hazard was eliminated, according to the OCFA.

The crash and leak was reported about 5:50 p.m. in the 12600 block of Beach Boulevard, near Lampson Avenue, Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority said.

An SUV that was involved in the crash left the scene and was later found unoccupied by deputies, according to the sheriff's department.

Leaking gas could be heard hissing after the crash, Concialdi said.

A gas company crew arrived about 6:25 p.m. and got to work shutting off the flow so repairs could be made, he said.
