LAX Officials Give Update on People Mover Project: Expect it Open by 2024

The Automated People Mover Project would include three new stations inside LAX's central terminal area.

Officials hope to complete a planned rail line to the Los Angeles International Airport by 2024 for the Summer Olympics, airport administrators said.

The so-called Automated People Mover Project includes the construction of three stations inside LAX’s central terminal area, allowing the Metro rail system to connect directly to one of the nation’s busiest airports, according to airport officials at the latest Metro Board of Directors meeting.

One of the stations would serve as a rental car facility for dozens of rental car companies that serve the airport. The people mover project will also include a transfer to the Crenshaw/LAX line at Aviation/96th Street.

Officials aim to begin construction in 2017 or 2018 and complete the project within five or seven years, just in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Los Angeles is expected to bid next year to host the 2024 Games.
