Hundreds of swallows have ditched their usual nests in San Juan Capistrano for Palm Desert, where they’re getting comfortable at Xavier College Preparatory High School.
“Around a month ago this same time last year, a bunch of swallows started settling in,” said Chris Alling, principal of Xavier. “It’s quite the surprise.”
Why the flock relocated is still in question, but gawkers say the tiny, insect-loving birds seem happy with their new digs.
“They came back this year full force and their houses are full. They seem to like it,” said Bob Van Schoyck, maintenance supervisor at Xavier.
Whatever the reason, they haven't ruffled any feathers.
The school is expecting this to become a tradition, as the birds are currently caring for eggs that will hatch in the next few weeks.
