Mountain Lion Finds Way to Survive in Woolsey Fire Burn Area

A young mountain lion that managed to survive the Woolsey Fire appears to be in good health despite her entire home range being within the fire's burn area, biologists say.

P-65 is one of 11 mountain lions tracked via radio collars by the National Park Service. The young female has remained within the perimeter of the fire in the months since it burned 96,000 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Biologists recently recaptured P-65 to replace her radio collar and found her to be in good health. They theorize she has found patches of unburned foliage and hunting mule deer.

Another mountain lion, P-64, was found dead a few weeks after the fire was extinguished with burns on its paws.
