A woman walking with children on the campus of a Rubidoux elementary school was shot in the back, but didn't realize it until she checked into a hospital, authorities said today.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ina Arbuckle Elementary School, in the 3600 block of Packard Avenue, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's Sgt. Sergio Rodriguez said a 37-year-old woman and several children were leaving the school playground when the woman felt a sudden sharp pain in her back.
"She drove herself to a local hospital, where the attending staff found she was the victim of a gunshot wound," Rodriguez said in a statement.
The woman should recover, he said.
No suspects have been identified in the attack.
A secretary at the elementary school said staffers were unaware of the shooting. Calls to the Jurupa Unified School District superintendent's office were not immediately returned.
