CHP: Unbelted Driver Dies in Perris Crash

PERRIS, Calif. -- An unbelted, 24-year-old pickup driver was thrown from the truck and killed Wednesday when he lost control of the vehicle on northbound Escondido (215) Freeway, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

Randall Hayes died in the single-vehicle crash reported at 3:54 a.m. near state Route 74 offramp, according to the CHP.

Hayes was driving his 2004 Ford F-150 in the No. 1 at about 70 mph when he lost control of his truck, CHP Officer Ron Thatcher said.

The truck hit the center divider and skidded across the top of it for a "considerable distance" before overturning and coming to rest on the northbound side, Thatcher said.

Hayes, however, was ejected and landed on the shoulder of southbound lanes, he said.

Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the accident, Thatcher said.
