Deputies Nab Armed Burglary Suspect After Shot Fired

A cornered burglary suspect that allegedly aimed a rifle at police was shot at by a deputy and later subdued, deputies said Monday.

Officers responded to a call of a burglary in progress in the 22800 block of Jantar Lane in Mead Valley around 10:20 a.m. Sunday. David Gregory Yates, 49, of Mead Valley, was seen running from the area, according to sheriff's Sgt. Todd Torrenti.

With the help of a sheriff's helicopter, deputies were able to corner Yates, who had armed himself with a rifle, Torrenti said.

Yates pointed the rifle at a circling police helicopter. When deputies gave several commands to drop the rifle, the suspect lowered the weapon and pointed it at the officers. A deputy fired one round missing Yates, who fell to the ground, according to Torrenti.

A stun gun was used to subdue Yates who resisted as deputies approached. He was then taken into custody, Torrenti said.

Yates was booked for suspicion of burglary, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and a parole violation, according to Sgt. Torrenti.

The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave per department policy.
