Hellooo, World! First Babies in Southland

A girl born just 22 seconds after midnight in Irvine appears to be one of the very first babies born in Southern California this year.

Peyton Lyn missed being a 2008 tax deduction for her folks by just a third of a minute, said hospital spokeswoman Socorro Serrano. The 8-pound, 3-ounce girl born to Katie and Eric Gills was also the heavyweight of the morning.

In the San Fernando Valley at Kaiser's hospital in Woodland Hills, a baby boy born to 35-year-old Ngockhanh Le and husband Gioan Ho appeared to be the first baby born in Los Angeles County this year, arriving at 12:08 a.m. Baby Le, who hadn't been named yet, weighed in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces.

In Baldwin Park, baby Carolyn H. Ahn was -- at first -- reported the winner of the New Year's baby derby in the network of Kaiser Permanante hospitals in Los Angeles County. She was originally reported to have been born 55 seconds after the new year started, but hospital officials later said a nurse working the overnight shift meant to say Carolyn was born 55 minutes after the hour.
She was born to Jenny Ahn, 36, and husband Kent Ahn, Serrano said, and weighed in at 7 pounds, 2 ounces.

Inland Empire

A baby girl born at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Riverside 12:55 a.m. today was among the first born in the Inland Empire this year.

A 36-year-old registered nurse from Corona, Jubilee Arabe, gave birth to 7-pound, 9-ounce Julieme, hospital spokeswoman Socorro Serrano said. The baby is the Jubilee and Jeremy Arabe's fourth child. The couple has three daughters already.
