Body Parts Found at Separate Water Plants May Belong to Woman

Remains were found within two days at water plants 30 miles from each other

Investigators say there is a link between the human remains found Monday in Industry and remains found over the weekend in Carson. A female human torso was discovered at a sewage plant about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Kathy Vara reports from The Industry for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. Oct. 28, 2013.

Investigators believe human remains found at a wastewater treatment plant Monday may be from the same body as remains found in Carson two days earlier.

While checking a clogged line at the wastewater plant in the city of Industry on Monday, officials discovered the remains of a human torso and head, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Lt. Mike Rosson.

On Oct. 26, about 30 miles away in Carson, officials uncovered remains of a human leg and foot in a waste water treatment plant, officials said.

Realizing there is a direct link between the Industry sanitation processing area and the Carson plant, detectives believe the parts may be from the same body, Rosson said.

The remains may be that of a female, possibly Hispanic, from the San Gabriel Valley area east of the 605 Freeway.

"Anything that comes into this water plant must move through a 17-inch line before going through a centrifugal pump," Rosson said. "So you can imagine what kind of damage to a person's body would happen."

The Industry plant is located in the 1900 block of Workman Mill Road (map), near the 605 and 60 freeway interchange, and the Carson plant is in the 24500 block of South Figueroa Street.

Industry is about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
