Indio Police Search for Suspects in Stagecoach Sexual Assault

Police say a 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by three men while using a portable bathroom

Indio police detectives are still looking for a lead in the case of a 17-year-old girl who police say was sexually assaulted Friday at the Stagecoach country music festival in the Coachella Valley.

The assault occurred at about 8:30 p.m. when three men broke into a portable bathroom the teenager was using near the entrance area, said Benjamin Guitron, a police spokesman.

“We don’t know ages, nationality. We just know it was three males,” Guitron said. “We hope someone saw something."

The girl, who was visiting from out of town, described one of the men as having blonde hair.

Police arrested 174 people at Stagecoach over the weekend, mostly for alcohol-related crimes.

By comparison, police arrested an average of 118 people each weekend of the Coachella Valley Arts and Muisc Festival, which took place over two weekends at the same site as Stagecoach just one week before.

The discrepancy could be due in part to lesser alchol restrictions at the country music festival.

An e-mail to festival-promoter Goldenvoice seeking official Stagecoach attendance numbers was not immediately returned. Coachella had about 80,000 to 85,000 attendees during the first weekend, a festival record, Indio Police said on April 18.

“Our staff didn’t see a difference in attendance,” Guitron said comparing the attendance of all three festival weekends.

Anyone with information about Friday’s assault are asked to call Indio Police detectives at (760) 391-4057 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at (760) 341-7867.
