Maggots Eating Fresno Morgue

FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno County coroner says maggots are in the walls and flooring on the morgue and drop from the ceiling as his colleagues work.

Coroner David Hadden called the media for a tour Wednesday to show what he described as "intolerable" working conditions.

He said the deteriorating WWII-era morgue is a perfect breeding ground for flies and their offspring. It's in one of the hottest counties in the state and lacks air conditioning.

Supervisor Judy Case said she's aware of the problems and pledges something will be done. She said she did not want to approve finances before Tuesday's election to see what money Fresno has available.

Supervisor Susan Anderson opposed the delay and called the situation embarrassing.
