Man, 88, Drives Car into People, Restaurant

An 88-year-old man accidentally drove his Jaguar into a Redondo Beach restaurant Sunday, injuring five people, one seriously, police said.

The Redondo Beach resident drove into the Ham Supreme Shop at 403 N. Pacific Coast Highway, near King Harbor, at about 2 p.m. while attempting to park, said Sgt. Peter Grimm of the Redondo Beach Police Department.

The Jaguar struck pedestrians on the sidewalk before crashing through the glass storefront, pinning a woman between the car and a wall and knocking a boy into an adjacent business, Grimm said.

"Apparently he mistook the accelerator for the brake pedal," Grimm said. "The vehicle lurched forward and struck several pedestrians, then went through a plate glass window and struck diners inside the restaurant. It forced diners through a drywall with aluminum studs and into an adjoining business, which was closed."

The woman possibly had broken bones, but the boy and three others were not seriously injured, although all were taken to hospitals, Grimm said.

The driver was dazed but uninjured, and was driven home by Redondo Beach police, Grimm said.

The driver will be tested by the Department of Motor Vehicles to determine if he should be allowed to continue to drive, Grimm said.
