Driver of Stolen Cargo Van Crashes Into LAPD Cars During Pursuit

The driver ran from the vehicle and slipped on a wet sidewalk before officers took him into custody

The driver of a stolen cargo van smashed head-on into LAPD cruisers and other vehicles during a chase Tuesday afternoon on South Los Angeles surface streets and freeways.

The driver's circuitous route -- the chase began in South LA -- led officers in both directions on the 110 Freeway before the subject exited onto surface streets and crashed into an LAPD cruiser and sport utility vehicle at an intersection. The driver reversed away from the officer's vehicle before returning to the freeway and making another exit onto surface streets at Slauson Avenue.

The driver continued on the westbound 10 Freeway at about 1:30 p.m., nearly sideswiping a school bus at high speed.

The driver exited onto suface streets again and collided with another vehicle on Washington Boulevard. An LAPD vehicle rammed the van, but the driver escaped again and continued into the USC area.

At least four people in a front yard could be seen running as the van crashed onto a curb in front of the home.

The van sustained heavy damage after the second series of collisions and began to slow a few miles later.

One male subject ran from the van at an intersection on Vermont Avenue south of the USC campus. The subject slipped on a wet sidewalk -- aerial video showed a garden hose nearby -- and officers took him into custody.
